Loquats are a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, B6 and C. In additional, loquats are filled with bone-fortifying minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus. With loquat trees producing abundant fruit during the spring and summer, why not turn them into a delicious tea beverage?  The best thing about this natural, homemade tea is that loquats make a naturally sweet tea…..without using sugar.

What you’ll need:

  1. Six-eight freshly picked loquats
  2. Three young loquat leaves (smooth, without “fur”)
  3. Three young key lime tree leaves (or try lemon or kumquat tree leaves

Loquat Tea Instructions:

  1. Fill an electric tea kettle or stove-top teapot with enough water to fill your serving teapot.  Bring to boil.  Let water cool slightly while you prepare leaves and fruit.
  2. Wash loquat fruit and loquat and citrus leaves.
  3. Tear fresh leaves into pieces, placing them in the bottom of your serving teapot. Discard stems.
  4. Cut loquats in half (removing seeds and discarding them).
  5. Put loquat pieces in the bottom of serving teapot.
  6. Fill your serving teapot with recently boiled water, and allow tea to steep for 4-6 hours for a full infusion of the taste of the fruit and leaves.
  7. Fill your four tea drinking glasses with tea, add nugget ice, and put on lids.  Put straws into to tea glass top, and enjoy this delicious, fruit tea.

NOTE:   For a nice twist, make a pot of loquat fruit sweet tea ahead and use it to make nugget ice. Simply fill your freezer nugget ice trays with the tea.  Adding loquat tea “ice” to your fresh loquat tea makes it super fruity and very loquaty-delicious!
